Planning Integrated Thematic Units of Study

Laura Kroeger

The purpose of this project was the creation of a manual/handbook for teachers to use in planning integrated thematic units of study.

The author's introduction describes the handbook:

This handbook's purpose will be to consider the composition of thematic units of study and how they can be an effective means of organizing instruction in the classroom. Also, one of the many ways of planning a thematic unit will be described later on in the handbook. You will be asked to choose a theme of your own and plan each component of it as that component is elaborated upon until each arc of the circle (Goals and Objectives, Process, Content, Instructional Strategies, and Assessment and Evaluation) on the cover has been touched.

Appendices A and B illustrate two additional variations on theme planning. One is an example of two high school teachers collaborating to integrate History and English. The other is a unit for grades 3-6, developed by an individual teacher, which can also be readily adjusted to primary or middle years.

A bibliography of books that might prove helpful in further exploration of thematic units of study is found at the end of the handbook.

Planning Integrated Thematic Units of Study, is available for purchase from the Teaching Materials Centre in the Stewart Resources Centre in Saskatoon.
