Research grants totalling
$85,000 will be awarded in 2012. The number and
amount of the grants may be small or large within the limit set
by the total research budget.
Research funded
by the Foundation should contribute to the improvement of teaching
and learning and focus directly on instruction in the context of
the PreK-12 education system. Preference will be given in the coming
year to proposals that support research by classroom teachers. Active
classroom teachers who are interested in pursuing a field of inquiry
but have little formal research experience are encouraged to apply.

The McDowell
Foundation is an independent charitable organization established
in 1991. It was created to meet the need expressed by many teachers
for better, teacher-oriented research into education. Teachers were
convinced that they needed to become more actively involved in the
generation of educational knowledge and ensure that research into
teaching and learning is practical and relevant to the work of the
classroom teacher. Over 220 research projects involving hundreds of teachers
from across the province have now received funding from the Foundation.
The Foundation
is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Saskatchewan
Teachers' Federation and is assisted by an Advisory Committee with
broad representation from teachers, educational organizations and
the business community. Decisions regarding research grants are
made by a Project Review Committee appointed by the Board of Directors.
The majority of people sitting on the Committee are classroom teachers.
